Official Release Date:

The Maskandi album was released officially on the 2nd of September, 2024. This Extended Play showcases Gqilaza‘s blend of traditional maskandi sounds with contemporary influences, further solidifying his place in the evolving landscape of Maskandi music.

Number of Tracks:

The Maskandi music project houses a total of five songs. The “Nyanga Yami” album by Gqilaza, released in 2024, features a total of five (5) song. Each song showcases the Gqilaza’s mastery of maskandi music, blending traditional Zulu sounds with contemporary elements. The Extended Play captures a variety of themes, ranging from love and social issues to the everyday experiences of modern Zulu life, making it a compelling addition to their musical legacy.

Official Collaborations/Featured Artists:

Gqilaza featured only one guest artist in the five track project, he collaborated with talented artist, Luleka Zulu in the second and fourth tracks titled Ngang’ Dakiwe and Ngeke Ngikuncenge respectively. This exciting collaboration brings together some of the most innovative minds in the Maskandi genre, resulting in a truly unforgettable musical experience.

Total Playtime/Duration of the EP:

The 5 tracks project has a record of total playtime of 25 minutes. The shortest track is “Umjolo” which is number 1st in the tracklist with a playtime of 3 minutes 50 Secs. The longest track has a playtime of 7 minutes 39 seconds and it is titled “Dedani Bafana”, been the 5th and last track on the Maskandi music Project.

About The Artist (Gqilaza):

Born, Yamkela Gqilaza but musically known as Gqilaza, is a rising star in the Maskandi music scene, hailing from Pietermaritzburg in the vibrant province of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. He attended the University of KwaZulu-Natal between 2018 and 2021. He released his debut album on November 18, 2020 while he was still a student at KZN University. The debut album is titled “Iyang’dina Lento” and housed a total of 10 songs.

Gqilaza grew up in a musical family, surrounded by the rich sounds of Maskandi and traditional Zulu music. His early exposure to these genres sparked a deep love and appreciation for the art form, leading him to pursue a career in music.
